Themes in Literature

What is the central idea or underlying messages of a book or piece of text?

Themes are rarely stated in the book, instead the reader must consider the plot, characters, setting to infer themes

For example, think about the Topic and Theme of the classic story Cinderella.
If you are describing the TOPIC, you might say it is a story about a poor girl who marries a
prince.

But if you are describing the THEME, it could be described as an example of karma or good
things happening to good people.

What is the theme in:

Tortoise and the Hare ?????

Wizard of Oz???????

WEEKLY BLOGPOST

Learning Goal:  To find an inspiring video to share with your peers

  • Find an inspiring video
  • How does it inspire you? (Summary.Reflection)
  • Show most important part of video (No longer than 2 minutes)
  • Both an oral presentation and writing task
Lauren Hill, a college student from Cincinnati was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, a year ago. Lauren had two goals that she wanted to accomplish while she was still able to.   First, she wanted to play in a college basketball game and secondly, she wanted to raise money for paediatric charities. She accomplished both!

Speechless, blown away, remarkable, sad.... are the first thoughts that ran through my head when I watched those inspirational videos.  It's hard to imagine where Lauren gets her courage and strength from.  As a coach and educator, one of my main objectives is to teach my students/athletes the importance of resilience, hard work, and to be a true sportsman.  Through sport, Lauren and her teammates certainly demonstrate character traits that any parent would be proud of.  You may see a girl playing basketball, I see a girl who lives life to it's fullest and doesn't take anything for granted.  Lauren, you are an inspiration to everyone!

LOVE THIS QUOTE

"Don't think outside the box, think without the box!" - Kathy Witherow

Weekly Blogpost "What will the world look like in the year 2050?" (36 years from now)

Part 1: On Google Drive create a document called "What will the world .......".  List and explain what you think the world will look like in the year 2050?  Be sure to include school, transportation, technology, and daily life along with your own ideas.

Beginning of Mr. K

I'm intrigued to see the world in thirty six years time.  To begin with, I will be sixty seven years old,  and collecting old age pension.  I will have been married for forty years.  There is a strong possibility I will be bald and less mobile.

It's hard to believe that when I started teaching seven years ago, laptops were scarce, my left hand erased my writing on the chalkboard and overhead projectors were a teacher's best friend.  Wait, overheads are still some teacher's go to device.....

Part 2: Create a list of 10 items that will no longer exist!  For example: Desktop Computers, snail mail etc

Beginning of Mr. Kaufman's List

1. Desktop Computers

2. Snail Mail
